#1 vs #2 diesel
« on: July 30, 2023, 11:21:32 PM »
Hi all,

I have a boat with a Cummins 6CT, I have 4 fuel tanks, the front two are paired up together, and those are about 7/8s full. I have one tank that’s 1/3s full, about 1000 gallons all in all. My 4th tank has several hundred gallons, but it’s #1 diesel. The other tanks are all #2. I’ve added a quart of 2 stroke oil and quart of ATF to the tank with #1, but I am very conscious about protecting my engine. The #1 diesel has primarily been used for stove fuel but I see no advantage to having multiple grades of fuel aboard my boat, and considering this i am now living on my first commercial fishing vessel I am debating the best way to us up the #1 diesel, also considering it is summer time here in southeast Alaska. I’ve been a diesel mechanic for years but admittedly I have never been crossed with this issue. Now owning a commercial vessel of my own, I still have a few green cards. I’ve always just been in charge of fixing diesels and keeping them happy for other people but now that I’m running one commercially, well it’s just never been something that has crossed my mind. She has 9100 hours and I don’t wanna do anything that could hurt it, does the #1 just have a lower cetane rating? Will it lower my fuel economy?

I’d love to hear from other diesel mechanics, equipment workers, dirt haulers, truckers, etc, because my boat is basically a floating semi truck.

While I’ve been a diesel tech for the private sector specifically in the yacht world, owning a piece of industrial grade equipment is….. daunting. Nothing I can’t handle but have a question or two

-E

Not sure where you got it but we haven’t had actual #1/stove oil for quite a few years & sell Jet A for #1 heating fuel. It has less lubricity than diesel so if you were wanting to use it up I would figure out how to mix a low percentage in with your diesel & use it up over time. :twocents:

Kinda thought the difference is just a winter additive so it doesn't gel?  :dunno:
